No. 1 Baseball Splits Doubleheader with No. 2 USC

April 5, 1998

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 USC baseball team hit three home runs in a 7-4 victory over No. 1 Stanford in the second game of a doubleheader to salvage a split at Dedeaux Field in Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division play. The Cardinal, behind the pitching of junior RHP Chad Hutchinson, won the first game, 7-6.

The Trojans, who snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Cardinal with the win in the finale of the three-game series, are now 28-8 overall and 14-4 in the Six-Pac. The Cardinal is 27-5-1, 12-3. The Cardinal won the first game on Friday night, 1-0.

In game two, senior LF Jeremy Freitas hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to give USC a 2-0 lead. In the third, junior 1B Robb Gorr also blasted a two-run home run and junior RF Dominic Correa had a two-run single to make it 6-0.

Stanford closed to within 6-3 in the top of the fifth as senior SS Jay Pecci walked with the bases loaded and junior CF Jody Gerut had a two-RBI single. But USC junior DH/LHP Jason Lane, who earned the victory in relief, hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the frame to give the Trojans a four-run lead, 7-3.

Stanford closed the scoring in the top of the sixth when junior 3B Josh Hochgesang hit a solo home run.

Lane (4-0) went 3 2/3 innings in relief and gave up just one run on three hits. Senior RHP Jack Krawczyk, the Pac-10's career save leader, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save of the season and the 40th of his career.

In the first game, Hutchinson (6-2) gave up nine hits and three earned runs in 8 1/3 innings to get the victory. Freshman RHP Justin Wayne earned his fourth save.

The game was tied, 3-3, until the top of the sixth when Hochgesang led off with a home run. In the top of the seventh, the Cardinal scored three more runs, one on an RBI single by Hochgesang, to make it 7-3.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth, when Gorr crushed a three-run home run to right-center field to pull the Trojans within one run. The next batter walked, but Wayne got the final hitter to fly out.
